From the state-of-the-art machinery used in production and testing to the scientific research and development of new outsole compounds, Anvil Traction is invested in producing footwear that is unrivalled in terms of slip resistance and all-day comfort and durability for the wearer. It is this commitment that has seen us become the UK market leader in specialist slip resistant footwear with results that exceed official SRC requirements by an incredible 323%.


The outstanding slip resistant properties of Anvil Traction footwear are achieved with a combination of the grid pattern and the rubber compound, which together provide maximum slip resistance. 

Developing the optimum compound that not only ticks the boxes of producing a reliable slip resistant shoe but exceeds them and provides market leading footwear, requires significant investment in research and development. To this end, Anvil Traction has in recent years collaborated on a research programme with Sheffield University and employs a full time Polymer Chemist who works exclusively on developing the Anvil Traction outsole.

The vast majority of safety footwear on the market today utilises a sole unit made with a PU based compound, resulting in a hard, plastic type sole unit with poor levels of slip resistance. The Anvil Traction sole units however, are made with a rubber compound similar to that of a car tyre which offers far better levels of grip in wet and greasy conditions by dispersing water and oil out through its tread pattern and making firm contact with the walking surface.

Anvil Traction’s unique rubber compound grips the microscopic roughness of the underfoot surface, whilst the octagonal grid pattern channels liquids out from under the shoe’s sole.

A further feature of the outsoles is the yellow wear indicator cleat. This cleat gives the wearer an important guide to the attrition rate of the footwear and provides a good indication of when it should be replaced; a key consideration in maintaining optimum slip resistance.

Two examples of our slip-resistant outsoles are as follows:


  • Highly slip-resistant Octagonal design.
  • Wider spaced cleats that will avoid clogging in areas of high contamination.
  • Multiple leading edges provide a wiping action to move lubricants out of the way.
  • Yellow wear indicating cleat that focuses on the rate of sole abrasion and provides a visible indication of when footwear should be replaced.
  • Slip resistant rubber compound 07/03, which mechanically improves slip resistance.
  • Midlayer is made with PU foam, providing increased impact absorption and rebound due to its air pocket construction.


  • Scientifically designed octagonal tread pattern offers multi-directional slip resistance.
  • Staggered cleat set-up is self-cleaning during the walking action.
  • Heel breast helps with stability and safety for wearers regularly ascending or descending.
  • Yellow wear indicating cleat.

Design & Manufacture

The Anvil Traction range is designed by our in-house design team based at our head office in the UK, who work closely with the Technical team to ensure our range not only looks and feels great but is suitable for its intended purpose and conforms to the relevant safety standards. 

Together they work to develop new and innovative designs and features to ensure that our footwear pushes boundaries in terms of both style and real benefits to the user such as the Anvil Traction enCounter; an ergonomically designed and fully supportive heel counter component that holds your foot in place and supports your feet for vastly improved comfort. Another design feature is the Anvil Traction ANTI-PERF technology; a composite midsole offering unrivalled anti-penetration protection whilst not compromising on weight. The protective material offers additional benefits in the form of flexibility, shock buffering and ergonomics.

Quality & Testing

Anvil Traction takes great pride in providing a premium range of products that not only utilise top quality materials but also undergo stringent quality testing procedures. The processes in place incorporate sampling, materials intake control and online checking to ensure compliance with technical and quality standards. All of our supplier factories have ISO 9001 QC management systems in place alongside regular social accountability and ethical audits.

We have also invested in our own on-site laboratory at our UK head office which is furnished with state-of-the-art testing equipment including:

  • Impact test machine capable of achieving EN ISO 20345:2011 200J impact energy.
  • A universal compression and tensile test machine with 3 load cells. This is suitable for sole bond strength, tear, tensile and all manner of similar tests. It is also capable of achieving EN ISO 20345:2011 compression resistance 15kN. We have the addition of a custom designed Compression cage for Nail penetration resistance testing of both footwear and materials.
  • Electrical resistance testing of antistatic and conductive footwear (as received condition). This device is also able to achieve the ESD requirements in the as received state and during wear.
  • DIN outsole abrasion resistance testing. This device measures the volume loss to abrasion of a small sample of the sole compound. When combined with the tear strength and sole bond capabilities above this can give a good indication of the consistency, suitability and wear life of the sole.
